Quartiles

The Q index is a quantitative measure used to rank the quality of academic journals, classifying them into quartiles. According to the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) database and the SJR (Scimago Journal Ranking) portal, these quartiles are designated as Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4. A journal ranked in the first quartile (Q1) is among the top 25% of the most prestigious and frequently cited journals within its respective research field.

Ranking journals by quartiles facilitates:

  • The comparison of journals within a specific subject category.
  • The identification of the top journals in a research field.

The following should be considered:

  • Quartiles are updated annually.
  • They correspond to a particular category within academic research.
  • Quartile rankings can vary depending on the database.
