Metrics for Evaluating Journals Based on Citations in the Scopus Database
CiteScore – A metric that calculates the ratio of the number of citations received to the total number of research outputs (articles, reviews, conference proceedings, book chapters, and data papers) published over the preceding four-year period. It provides a way to evaluate and rank journals within a particular subject category.
SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) – A metric that measures weighted citations received by a journal, emphasizing the research topic, quality, and reputation of the journal. In other words, it accounts for both the number of citations a journal receives as well as the importance or prestige of the cited journals from which those citations originate. The SJR ranking is calculated over a four-year period. This metric serves as an alternative to the traditional Impact Factor, deriving its citation data from the Scopus database.
Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) – This metric measures the impact of articles within a particular journal, with an emphasis on the research topic. It refers to and accounts for the specific differences in citation patterns across different fields of study. The calculation focuses on determining the average number of citations received per paper in relation to the total citations in that research field.
