MathSciNet: Ranking and Evaluation Metrics in Mathematics

Mathematics Ranking Metrics Based on the MathSciNet Database

The ranking of journals in the fields of mathematics, statistics, and theoretical computer science is determined by the American Mathematical Society's database, MathSciNet, which includes the publications of the journal Mathematical Reviews (MR).

The journal ranking metric utilized in the database, known as the Mathematical Citation Quotient (MCQ), is based on:

  • The number of citations divided by the number of publications over a five-year period in a particular journal.
  • The metric is similar to the Impact Factor (IF) for five years with the main difference being the population of journals, which are from the field of mathematics and originate from publications in the MathSciNet database.
